ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose The objective of this study was analyzed the neuropsychological functions of students from a public school in Brazil, enrolled in the 1st and 2nd year of Elementary School at the time of the reopening of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic and to access the influence of family and contextual information on the performance of these skills. Methods 117 students participated in the study, as well as their parents or guardians. The children were evaluated in person using the Brief Child Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument (NEUPSILIN-Inf). The parents/guardians answered remotely the Inventory of Resources of the Family Environment and questions about socioeconomic classification and maternal education. Results The data showed a high prevalence of children who had problems or deficits in the functions of orientation, memory, language, visuospatial skills, arithmetic skills and verbal fluency. Furthermore, predictable activities that signal some degree of stability in family life are predictors of children's performance in orientation skills and resources that promote proximal processes significantly reflect on language performance. The results suggest that children included in families with a household income below one Brazilian minimum monthly salary presented poorer inhibitory control performances. Conclusion The impact of changes in neuropsychological skills in children's learning were presented and discussed, highlighting the need for immediate and targeted intervention of these functions. Contextual factors that influenced the performance of neuropsychological skills were also considered.

ABSTRACT

(analytical) The paper presents the results on how bullying, as scholar and social problem, is understood and assumed from the child's perspective. Therefore, a qualitative, hermeneutic-comprehensive research was carried out and focus groups were done by means of moppets and videos, graphic production, and storytelling. The participants were 626 students from 5 to 7 years old. The understanding went through elements consistent with the theory, such as exclusion, verbal harassment, affectation of be-longings and a new typology, lack of solidarity. Regarding the experiences, they specify teasing, physical harassment, theft, associated with the family context or none, the latter due to the confluence of the school space and the family in the same place in times of remote education. As for the solution, it is appealing to authority figures, relatives, assuming reconciliatory attitudes and playing.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between mental health and contextual factors has been increasingly investigated in the scientific literature to identify elements that may configure themselves as protective. The present study aimed to identify what resources (activities, family outings, toys, material elements, and learning) were offered in the daily lives of children with mental disorders, and from this, verify whether the offer of such resources in the family was associated with areas of greatest damage relative to mental health problems. METHODS: Thirty-three caregivers of/people responsible for children between 6 and 12 years of age with most frequent diagnoses in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder seen at a general hospital participated. We used the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ parents version) and Family Environment Resources Inventory (RAF). RESULTS: From a descriptive and correlational analysis, it was revealed that the more the mental health problems were present in children, the lower the family resources offer. CONCLUSIONS: The environmental resources offer proved to be protective for child development. Such findings are relevant to aid in outlining strategies for promoting mental health among children.

ABSTRACT

Background: Family environment plays a significant role in socio-emotional and educational adjustment in adolescents. In the present scenario, parents are in hurry to improve their standard of living and they have no time to engage in child-bearing activities. Low self-esteem is creating mental and psycho-social problems such as poor academic achievement, inadequate adjustments among the siblings and peers, impaired social functioning, suicide, and substance abuse among adolescents. Methodology: A School-based cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents of Hubli taluka. Information was collected by a self-administered questionnaire with components for Systematic assessment of family environment (SAFE), Self-esteem scale, and Adjustment inventory for school students (AISS). Results: Among 600 adolescents, 85.6% of adolescents had Normal self-esteem, 95%of families were competent, however only 1-7% of the students had an excellent adjustment. Emotional and social adjustment was better compared to Educational adjustment. Adjustment behavior and family environment had a positive association. There was a significant difference in the adjustment scores among low self-esteem and normal self-esteem (p<0.001) and also among discordant and competent families. Conclusion: The adjustment behavior depends on a better family environment and normal self-esteem. The Family environment has a positive effect on self-esteem as well as adjustment behavior. School mental health services should be initiated.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo explore the psychological defense styles and family environment among male prisoners of different terms of imprisonment, and to analyse the relationship between their psychological defense styles and family environment. MethodsA total of 200 male prisoners in a prison in Guangdong were randomly selected from April to June 2015, and they were classified into less than 5 years of imprisonment group (n=108) and 5 years or more imprisonment group (n=92). Their defense style and family environment were evaluated by Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) and Family Environment Scale-Chinese Version (FES-CV). Pearson correlation analysis was used to test the correlation between each scale score. ResultsThe factor scores of immature defense mechanism and intermediate defense mechanism of DSQ in the group with less than 5 years of imprisonment were lower than those in the group with 5 years or more imprisonment, with statistically significant differences (t=4.198, 1.137, P<0.01). The scores of FES-CV family intimacy, emotional expression and organizational factors in less than 5 years of imprisonment group were higher than those in 5 years or more imprisonment group (t=3.122, 2.993, 2.203, P<0.01), and the scores of contradiction factors were lower than those in 5 years or more imprisonment group (t=-3.682, P<0.01). The scores of DSQ immature, intermediate defense mechanism and concealment factor of male prisoners were negatively correlated with the scores of FES-CV family intimacy and emotional expression factor (r=-0.428~-0.172, P<0.05 or 0.01), and the scores of 4 factors in DSQ were all positively correlated with the scores of contradiction factor in FES-CV (r=0.175~0.384, P<0.05 or 0.01). ConclusionCompared with male prisoners with less than 5 years of imprisonment, those with 5 years or more are prone to adopt immature and intermediate defense mechanisms, and their family environments are characterized by apparent contradiction and a lack of family intimacy, emotional expression and organization. Furthermore, the defects of psychological defense mechanism of prisoners are related to their family environment.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo analyze the correlation between personality characteristics and family environment of undergraduate medical students taking psychology course. MethodsIn June 2017, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 67 undergraduate medical students taking psychology course, and all the selected individuals were assessed using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and Family Environment Scale-Chinese Version (FES-CV). Then Pearson correlation analysis was performed between the original scores of MMPI subscales and the scores of FES-CV subscales. ResultsThe scores of hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, psychopathic deviate, masculine-femininity, paranoia, psychasthenia and schizophrenia in MMPI of undergraduates were all higher than those of the national norm, with statistical differences (t=2.070~8.350, P<0.05 or 0.01). The scores of cohesion, intellectual-cultural orientation, organization and achievement orientation in FES-CV of undergraduates were all lower than those of the national norm, while the scores of conflict tendency was higher than that of the national norm, with statistical differences (P<0.05 or 0.01). Correlation analysis showed that cohesion score in FES-CV was negatively correlated with the scores of correction, hypochondriasis, depression and hysteria in MMPI (r=-0.410~-0.331, P<0.01). Conflict tendency score was positively correlated with the scores of hysteria and psychasthenia (r=0.315, 0.415, P<0.01). Active-recreational orientation score was negatively correlated with hypochondriasis score (r=-0.367, P<0.01) and positively correlated with schizophrenia score (r=0.346, P<0.01). Control score was positively correlated with hysteria score (r=0.366, P<0.01). ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#Although long maternal working hours are reported to have a negative effect on children's dietary habits, few studies have investigated this issue in Japan. Healthy dietary habits in childhood are important because they may reduce the risk of future disease. Here, we examined the relationship between maternal employment status and children's dietary intake in 1693 pairs of Japanese primary school 5th and 6th graders and their mothers.@*METHODS@#The survey was conducted using two questionnaires, a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire and a lifestyle questionnaire. The analysis also considered mothers' and children's nutrition knowledge, attitudes toward diet, and some aspects of family environment.@*RESULTS@#Longer maternal working hours were associated with children's higher intake of white rice (g/1000kcal) (β 11.4, 95%CI [1.0, 21.9]; working ≥8h vs. not working), lower intake of confectioneries (g/1000kcal) (β -4.0 [-7.6, -0.4]), and higher body mass index (BMI) (kg/m@*CONCLUSIONS@#Longer maternal working hours were significantly associated with higher intake of white rice and lower intake of confectioneries, as well as higher BMI among children. Even when a mother works, however, it may be possible to improve her child's dietary intake by other means such as nutrition education for children or enhancement of food environment.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Chronical criminals turn out to be responsible of most of the criminal activity, in addition to being the most persistent and violent. There exists limited longitudinal evidence that allows knowing how chronicity manifests itself in domestic violence aggressors. The objective of this investigation is to identify the most appropriate criteria to differentiate chronic men and establish the relationship between chronicity, violence and duration of the criminal career in 10 505 Chilean men arrested for domestic violence crimes in 2007, based on all new arrests produced the next 10 years. The design is a longitudinal pseudo-prospective, as if it corresponded to a prospective longitudinal study. The results show that three or more crimes are enough to properly identify chronic criminal careers, and that 12.7% of all men can be considered as serious, violent and chronic, presenting a criminal trajectory between eight and ten years, being responsible for more than 37% of total recidivism, reach a significantly high average of crimes and high prevalence of violent crimes.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Family environment is considered one of the essential contexts in life; one of the reasons is because people spend most of their quality time in the home. This study focused its interest in the positivity that this socio-physical con- text generates in the individual. The study aimed at identifying the relationship between the construct called a posi- tive family environment and the personal well-being of people living in urban and rural contexts. A sample of 202 people gave their answers, 68% woman, and 32% man, the age was between 18 y 76 years old with a mean of 34.7 (SD = 14.3). The instrument combined scales to measure socio-physical components in the family environment and personal well-being. Reliability, descriptive, and comparative analyses, as well as a structural equation model were performed. Results showed the existence of differences between people living in urban and rural zones on most of the socio-physical dimensions of the family environment. A higher-order factor was formed with physical and social aspects, this variable is called a positive family environment, and it is significantly related to personal well-being.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction The presence of mental disorders in a family may cause various losses in its functioning and characteristics. Objective To determine which environmental resources are offered to children with mental disorders by their families and how they correlated with the family functioning. Method The study included a total of 33 persons responsible for children with mental disorders. The subjects responded to two questionnaires to characterize family functioning (FACES IV) and the availability of resources in the family environment (RAF). Data were analyzed in a descriptively and the Spearman correlation test was used to identify associations between variables. Results Most of the children were male and attended school, and the most frequent psychiatric diagnoses were attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder. Most families were considered to have good family functioning (87.9%), with only 12.1% being considered dysfunctional. Regarding environmental resources, the highest mean values were assigned to the presence of toys (6.9 ± 2.0) and to family gatherings for routine activities (6.6 ± 2.3). Family cohesion, flexibility, communication, and satisfaction (functional) were positively correlated with the offer of activities and resources and negatively correlated with unbalanced (dysfunctional) subscales. Discussion and conclusion Children's mental disorders do not appear to affect family dynamics in a significant manner. However, family functioning interferes with the types of activities and resources it offers to the child and that may have an impact on his/her development.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between positive family environment variables, knowledge and exercise of family rights as well as social support in adolescents with high subjective well-being. After informed consent, 259 high school students participated with levels of excellence in academic performance in a city in northwestern of Mexico. As a result, the lambda de Wilks value = 0,659 and its transformed value (x.2 (10) = 104,14; p = 0,000) are significant. The variables evaluated of positive family environment and social support, with the exception for knowledge and enjoyment of family rights, discriminated significantly students with high reports of well-being. In conclusion, if the adolescent reports a positive family environment and social support, the greater the probability of subjective well-being.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To validate the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Family Environment Assessment questionnaire (Inventaire du Milieu Familial). Methods: The validation process was carried out in two stages. First, translation and back-translation were performed, and in the second phase, the questionnaire was applied in 72 families of children between 0 and 24 months for the validation process. The tool consists of the following domains: mother's communication ability; behavior; organization of the physical and temporal environment; collection/quantity of toys; maternal attitude of constant attention toward her baby; diversification of stimuli; baby's behavior. The following was performed for the scale validation: 1 - content analysis (judgment); 2 - construct analysis (factorial analysis - Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin, Bartlett, and Pearson's correlation tests); 3 - criterion analysis (calculation of Cronbach's alpha coefficient, intraclass correlations, and split-half correlations). Results: The mean age of the children was 9 ± 6.7 months, and of these, 35 (48.6%) were males. Most correlations between items and domains were significant. In the factorial analysis of the scale, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin values were 0.76, Bartlett's test showed a p-value < 0.001, and correlation between items and domains showed a p-value < 0.01. Regarding the validity, Cronbach's alpha was 0.92 (95% CI: 0.89-0.94). The intraclass correlation among the evaluators was 0.97 (0.96-0.98) and split-half correlations, r: 0.60, with p < 0.01. Conclusions: The Portuguese version of the Inventaire du Milieu Familial showed good to excellent performance regarding the assessed psychometric properties.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Family environment has a significant impact on the school path of children. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between different dimensions of family environment (cohesion, conflict, expressiveness, independence, assertiveness, cultural / intellectual orientation, leisure, religion; organization and control) and school performance of adolescents with and without history of school failure. It´s a correlational and comparative cross-sectional and quantitative study, in which 24 parents and 18 adolescents with a failure history participated, as also 19 parents and adolescents without the same history. They answered the Family Environment Scale. The comparison analysis indicated that leisure, in parents' assessment, and cohesion, in adolescents' assessment, were more present in the group without failure. In addition, correlation analysis revealed that when more family conflict was perceived by the adolescents; greater was the number of failures they experienced. The results suggest that an appropriate family environment can stimulate school success.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Episodic foresight (EF) refers to the ability to anticipate future states of the self. Despite almost two decades of research, no studies explored how family context variables relate to the development of this ability. The objectives of this study were to explore the association of socioeconomic status (SES), parental consideration of future consequences (CFC), and family environment quality on the development of episodic foresight and to compare the magnitude of the effects of these same variables on delay of gratification and planning. Sixty-four dyads composed by 4-year-old Uruguayan children and their main caregiver participated in the study. Children were administered experiments on episodic foresight, delay of gratification, planning, and receptive language. Parents reported socioeconomic status, family environment, and their consideration of future consequences. Even though parents' limit setting was associated to higher EF in children and parental CFC-I was a predictor in multiple regression analysis, these effects ceased to be significant when controlled by child's receptive language and caregiver education, being these the main predictors of EF. Results also indicate that SES significantly distinguishes the performance in future-oriented skills and language, being the magnitude of the effect higher for EF in comparison with planning and delay of gratification. This study supports that EF is related to SES to a greater extent than other variables traditionally assessed in studies of poverty and child development. We discuss implications of low SES and language skills in the light of EF development and immediate-oriented behavior in contexts of deprivation. (AU)
